My Grandmother taught me to knit. Like most little girls in the 1950s the first thing I made was a garter stitch square in white cotton - a dish-cloth, full of dropped stitch holes. In my life I have knitted with varying degrees of enthusiasm. A fashion for big chunky sweaters got me going once, another time the birth of my first baby and yet another, a holiday in France where the choice of wool and knitting patterns seemed so much better.
